It\u2019s a new year and a new decade, and a perfect time for reflection and goal setting. \u00a0Maybe you\u2019re not the resolution type, but a new year is always a perfect opportunity to take stock of what\u2019s going well in your life, and where you want to make changes. \u00a0Here are five things you should put on your to-do list to get done or at least started in this fresh new year.<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0Travel\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Of course we put traveling at the top of our list. \u00a0It\u2019s the single most important decision I made when I first decided to go overseas and it has had the biggest impact on my life and career. \u00a0Hyperbole? \u00a0Hardly. \u00a0While not everyone makes a career out of teaching abroad, you certainly can. \u00a0If it\u2019s only a year or two, you\u2019ll make great friends from around the world, eat a bunch of delicious food, and learn more about a new culture than all those people who only know foreign countries as places to vacation. \u00a0This applies to you if you already live abroad too \u2013 go to Vietnam, it rocks. \u00a0 Start saving up for Japan \u2013 it costs more but it\u2019s a must-see. \u00a0Places I\u2019ve never been but heard are incredible include Taiwan, Borneo, and the Philippines. \u00a0While your cousin is going home for every holiday and arguing with family, you\u2019re on a beach, in a high-rise, hiking through ruins, doing anything but the usual.<\/li>\n
  2. Save some money<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This is totally obvious but for so many young travelers with liberal arts degrees and the invisibility of youth, we forget to build up savings that becomes oh-so-necessary in a decade or two. \u00a0It\u2019s very easy to celebrate all the ways your life is different from your friends at home, so don\u2019t forget to do the important things they\u2019re doing too. \u00a0The good thing about this is that it\u2019s an easy thing to plan for the year, set up how much you want to save and how you\u2019re going to do it, and then you can go back to your crossword.<\/li>\n
  3. Learn a language<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Learn some Chinese for crying out loud. \u00a0Believe me, I understand how easy it is to live in China and not learn the language, but there are so many reasons to get started. \u00a0Obviously it helps to be able to ask for directions or explain to your taxi driver to turn left, but it also changes how you look at the country you\u2019re living in. \u00a0When you understand a language, you start to understand how to think differently and it\u2019s liberating. \u00a0The only downside is when you go home and your mom asks you to \u201csay something\u201d in front of her friends and like a parrot you come with a sentence you learned, like \u201cI\u2019m from Idaho.\u201d or whatever.<\/li>\n
  4. Try something new<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 forgive me for the corny and obvious resolution. \u00a0However, just like eating right and exercising, it\u2019s a darn good resolution. \u00a0This \u201csomething\u201d can be anything really. \u00a0Start knitting, try the darn chicken feet, buy a puzzle, brew beer, anything. \u00a0Small is fine \u2013 just keep your brain moving and learning and exploring new interests. \u00a0The older we get the more we go about business as usual, but don\u2019t be complacent, be that interesting person who takes up the piano later in life.<\/li>\n
  5. Write letters\/call home<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 whether you\u2019re already living abroad or about to, don\u2019t forget to keep in touch with all your people at home. \u00a0I know no one writes letters anymore, but you should. \u00a0It\u2019s cathartic to write, it\u2019s an important skill, and who doesn\u2019t love getting a letter? \u00a0Make your dear old mom happy and write her. \u00a0If you can\u2019t, then call. \u00a0Calling is so much easier now than it was 20 years ago when we had to cram in a smelly phone booth to check in with grandma. \u00a0Now you have What\u2019s App, Skype, WeChat, Viber (does anyone use that anymore?) or whatever other option is out there.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
