You know you want to go overseas and you\u2019ve started looking at jobs.\u00a0 Great!\u00a0 Going overseas will change the course of your life in so many ways.\u00a0 So how do you prepare for the application process?\u00a0We\u2019ve got eight tips to help you approach this process that are unique to the overseas teaching role.<\/p>\n

  1. Update your resume:<\/strong>\u00a0Be sure that your resume has the most up to date information.\u00a0Too often applicants fire off their resume that doesn\u2019t include their most recent job or relevant work experience.\u00a0While you can certainly use the same resume for a variety of English teaching roles, if you are applying for a counseling or a debate role, make sure you highlight any relevant experience.\u00a0Don\u2019t be that lazy applicant that sends a resume and then starts an interview explaining experience that isn\u2019t included.<\/li>\n
  2. Know your narrative:\u00a0<\/strong>Why do you want to teach overseas?\u00a0 Whether this is just one of many jobs you are considering, you are switching careers, or just starting your career, you will want to be able to explain why you are choosing to do this, especially if it\u2019s outside of your previous experience.\u00a0 Why does this matter?\u00a0 Because if your motivation to take this job doesn\u2019t add up, there\u2019s a greater possibility that you won\u2019t be able to successfully do the job or adapt to the country.\u00a0 So look at your experiences and make sure you know how to articulate why you want this.<\/li>\n
  3. Know what you want:<\/strong>\u00a0Whether this is a specific country, city, or type of teaching role, think about what you can accept and what you won\u2019t.\u00a0 While I always encourage people to not be too narrow in their ideas, if you have a specific reason that doesn\u2019t allow you to search outside a given area, then be up front with that in your job search.\u00a0 This applies to locations, types of jobs, and salaries.<\/li>\n
  4. Know the market:<\/strong>\u00a0While you do need to know what you need, you also need to understand the market you\u2019re diving into.\u00a0 What salaries can you expect?\u00a0 I definitely understand negotiating means aiming high in salary expectations but you should also be realistic in what you can expect.\u00a0 To go about this, start looking at salaries advertised on job sites and ask employers what the salary ranges they offer are.\u00a0\u00a0 Take into account other details like housing, flights, health insurance, and bonuses.\u00a0 If you are still unsure of what to expect, just listen to what recruiters tell you about their offers rather than approach it like a list of demands.<\/li>\n
  5. Broaden your search<\/strong>\u2013 The world is wide and there are so many beautiful places, jobs, and things to do. Though point three is important, don\u2019t box yourself in.\u00a0Look at jobs you might not otherwise, consider a city that you maybe haven\u2019t heard of, and overall just be sure to not put too many restrictions on the process before you know all the options.<\/li>\n
  6. Go the extra mile:<\/strong>\u00a0Approach the job hunt like you are bringing only your best self.\u00a0This involves three simple things \u2013 writing customized cover letters, displaying sincerity in the interview, and sending thank you notes.\u00a0 You\u00a0always<\/em>want to make a good impression, even if you don\u2019t accept the job.\u00a0 It\u2019s possible you may want to reconsider that job or company at a later date, and also be aware that many HR professionals stay in the industry but move to different jobs and they will remember you.<\/li>\n
  7. Ask questions:<\/strong>\u00a0So many people teach abroad these days it\u2019s easy to find a connection somewhere and you likely know someone who has taught overseas.\u00a0 Ask them about their experience, what they liked, what they recommend, and what they don\u2019t.\u00a0 Ask your recruiter too, as they have also lived abroad and all enjoy talking about their experience.\u00a0 There is a lot of great information online, but make sure to balance that research with people you can speak to as well.<\/li>\n
  8. Enjoy the process:<\/strong>\u00a0While job hunting can be time consuming, it\u2019s also a fun process to speak to people around the world about living abroad.\u00a0 In addition to helping you relax, you\u2019ll be very attractive to a recruiter if you\u2019re easy to talk to and feel like a positive person to be around.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You\u2019ll be overseas before you know it!\u00a0 As someone who has hired thousands of teachers over the last 15 years, I can assure you it\u2019ll go by quickly.\u00a0 Take the time to find the right job for you, and again, enjoy the process!<\/p>\n
